We started the basis for the herd in 1976 while teaching and coaching in Hayden, Colorado. I purchased bred females from the Carpenter Williams ranch in Hayden. When I moved to Fruita, Colorado, in August 1977, I continued to purchase bred cattle from the Carpenter Williams Ranch. I started performance testing by taking bulls to the Midland Bull Test in Montana then to the Four Corners Bull test in Hesperus, Colorado. Realizing there was a demand for polled Herefords, I started using polled genetics into the herd in the late 1980's, but in 1992 culled those first genetics from my herd because of not getting the results that I felt were needed to have a registered herd that would produce offspring that would meet the needs of commercial cattlemen. The use of Rell Poundmaker produced the top sire group in the Four Corners Test in Hesperus in 1995. We are striving to get cattle that have GOOD DISPOSITIONS; will calve easily; have high weaning and yearling weights with balanced EPD's; have good conversion of feed to ability to gain weight; and dams with good udders. The cattle herd is wintered in Fruita and taken to the high country east of Collbran, Colorado, at elevation of 8,000 feet in the summer and fall months. The breeding program using artificial insemination and synchronization to get the best Hereford genetics to improve our herd, have a short calving season, and use of a clean-up bull. Our calving season is January and early February; females that do not calf in this time frame are sold.
